Waterfalls & Hiking
Anna Ruby Falls
10 minutes from Helen · Easy · Paved trail · Dogs on leash welcome
The most visited waterfall in the area and for good reason. Anna Ruby Falls is actually two waterfalls — Curtis Creek and York Creek — converging at the same point in a dense hardwood cove. The trail is 0.4 miles each way on a paved, well-maintained path with very little elevation gain. Accessible for most fitness levels including older guests and young children. The cove turns spectacular in fall foliage season. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds — by 10 AM on a weekend it can get busy. Admission charged at the trailhead. Dogs on leash welcome on the trail.
Raven Cliffs Trail
15 minutes from Helen · Moderate · 5 miles round trip · Dogs on leash welcome
The best hike in the area that most visitors don't know about. Raven Cliffs Trail follows Dodd Creek through a narrow gorge with multiple waterfalls at different points along the route — the trail is 2.5 miles each way through increasingly dramatic terrain. Moderate difficulty with some rocky sections and creek crossings. Significantly less crowded than Anna Ruby Falls and more rewarding for experienced hikers. Dogs on leash welcome throughout. Park at the Raven Cliffs trailhead on Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway.
Dukes Creek Falls
15 minutes from Helen · Moderate · 2 miles round trip · Chattahoochee National Forest
A 150-foot waterfall accessible via a 2-mile round trip trail that descends into a steep gorge in the Chattahoochee National Forest. One of the tallest single-drop waterfalls in Georgia. The trail goes down into the gorge rather than up — easy going in, more effort coming out. Worth the trip for the scale of the falls. A recreation fee applies — bring cash or a credit card for the kiosk. Dogs generally welcome on leash in the National Forest.
Helton Creek Falls
30 minutes from Helen · Easy · Short trail · Family-friendly
Two tiered waterfalls near Blairsville on a short, easy trail — significantly less visited than Anna Ruby Falls and worth the 30-minute drive for a quieter experience. The lower falls has a natural swimming hole area that's popular in summer. A genuinely good alternative for visitors who've already done Anna Ruby or want something off the beaten path.
Brasstown Bald
45 minutes from Helen · Moderate to strenuous · Highest point in Georgia
The highest point in Georgia at 4,784 feet, with 360-degree views from the observation deck at the summit. The summit trail is about a half mile but steep. A shuttle is available from the parking area for those who prefer not to hike up. On a clear day the views extend into four states. Worth the drive for the payoff at the top — especially in fall when the surrounding forests are at peak color.
Water Activities
Chattahoochee River Tubing
Downtown Helen · Seasonal (Memorial Day – Labor Day) · Multiple outfitters
The most iconic Helen summer activity. Outfitters including Helen Tubing & Waterpark and Cool River Tubing rent tubes and shuttle you back upstream after your float. The river runs right through Downtown Helen — you can watch from the riverfront restaurants or jump in. The experience runs roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on water levels. Check minimum age and weight requirements with the outfitter — they vary. Changing rooms, showers, and picnic areas typically available at outfitter locations. Not recommended during or after heavy rain when water levels rise.
Unicoi State Park — Lake & Kayaking
1 mile from Hutch Mountain · Year-round · Kayak & paddleboard rentals
Unicoi State Park has a 53-acre lake with a seasonal swimming beach, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and a fishing pier. One of the most visited state parks in Georgia with well-maintained trails that loop around the lake and into the surrounding forest. The lake is calm and good for beginners — a morning on the water in a kayak with mountain views is genuinely one of the better low-key activities in the area. Dogs on leash welcome throughout the park.
Smithgall Woods State Park — Fly Fishing
20 minutes from Helen · Advance reservation required · Trophy trout stream
One of the premier catch-and-release fly fishing destinations in the Southeast. Smithgall Woods protects a section of Duke's Creek and limits fishing access to preserve the wild trout population — advance reservations are required and daily access is limited. If fly fishing is the priority, this is the destination in North Georgia. The park also has hiking trails and wildlife viewing. A cottage rental program is available for multi-day fishing stays.

Wineries & Food
Yonah Mountain Vineyards
20 minutes from Helen · Tasting room · Wine cave · Mountain views
One of the best wineries in North Georgia, set at the base of Yonah Mountain with mountain views from the tasting room. The estate produces a range of red and white wines with a focus on Bordeaux varietals suited to the North Georgia climate. Habersham Winery — Nacoochee Village
Minutes from Helen · Tasting room · Nacoochee Village
Georgia's oldest winery, located in Nacoochee Village just outside Helen. Habersham produces a broad range of wines including some made from Georgia-grown muscadine grapes — a distinctly Southern varietal worth trying if you haven't. The Nacoochee Village setting also has antique shops, a pizza restaurant, and a zip line operation, making it a good afternoon destination.
Dining in Downtown Helen
Downtown Helen · Multiple options · German + American
Helen's restaurant scene is better than the Bavarian exterior suggests. The standouts: Bodensee for authentic German food — spaetzle, goulash, and schnitzel done properly. Hofer's Bakery for breakfast pastries and Reuben sandwiches made by German immigrants who've been in town since the 1950s. Nacoochee Village Tavern & Pizzeria for wood-fired pizza. The biergartens along the riverfront are worth a stop for the atmosphere, especially during Oktoberfest season.

A working grist mill on the Chattahoochee River dating to 1876, still grinding grains the traditional way. The mill store sells stone-ground grits, cornmeal, flour, and other locally milled products — one of the better souvenirs you can bring back from the area. Worth a stop even just to see the working mill wheel and the riverfront setting.

Charlemagne's Kingdom
Model Railroad Museum

Kids enjoy it; so do adults with any interest in model trains or European geography.

Cleveland, GA · 15 minutes from Helen · Free admission · Family-friendly
The original home of the Cabbage Patch Kids in Cleveland, GA. Planning Your Trip
How many days do you need? Two nights is the minimum to feel settled — long enough to do a waterfall hike, a dinner in Helen, and a morning on the deck before heading home.
